Thanks Karl,

So far I tried cutting the whole object-set then re-pasting it but no luck. Re-importing "objects only" fails as well.

The OpenGL view of these things seems to me to tie in with your ideas on flipped normals, and/or cover attribute lines of enquiry ... and you say these attributes are within reach? Where do I look? Curious that ortho doesnt show the problem but perspective does ... the perspective calcs might be turning then inside out somehow.

And yes, only cylinders are affected. No cylinders created within the current project show the effect.

The importing from 4.5 has either altered the problem that was showing in 4.5 or created a new one. My bet is that the contamination happened in 4.5 and is now simply altered somewhat.

And yes, a global fix in script form would be quite handy although if I have to fix the things one at a time then I might just sort out the 500 or so that are larger and more prominent.

If I had seen the problem when I first started working on their part in this project then I would have re-created them with current, more stable, pieces .... but I didnt.

Might see what scope materials think they are up to on the things, maybe I can "wall-paper" them all ... desparate.

Thanks

Subject: RE: Shadow Error

Hi

I once had a similar problem, but unfortunately I'm not sure how I dealt with it, or how or by whom I got help from (maybe from Vesa?). I think the problem was either related to cylinders, imported v3.x cylinders, or imported cutted elliopsoids (curved conecylinder sortof) from v3.x. I think it narrowed down to certain imported objects having their cover attributte (and/or hollow) not being set correctly (maybe combined with flipped normals as per the v5 SP1 bug). At the time you couldn't set this attributte, but I believe you can now. However, if the project was imported ages ago, this could be the bug causing it.

Have you tried re-importing the bad cylinders only?

Does the rendering bug still occur if you re-create one of the bad cylinders and delete the old one?

If this helps, maybe someone could help write a script that reads the existing cylinder data, and re-creates them, and deletes the old ones?

It's too good a scene to go amiss caused by a stupid bug :-)

Sorry if I couldn't be of more help, but... errr... I hope it helps.

Third try .... no attachments since these fail. The JPG mentioned is at

and so is the "Guidelines to Getting Image Files to Printers" ... it's not a tutorial.

Anyway, hoping there's an answer to the Shadow error I've run into,

Subject: Shadow Error

Second post since the the first didnt make it ... so resampled the jpg.

Hi List,

Attached JPG shows a render from a perspective camera and on the right an ortho camera. Analytic cylinders show an incorrect dark artifact that is not possible from the lighting.

I would like to render this scene in perspective but cant beat this thing.

Tried different illumination materials, etc., but all fail . . . although some give strange results within the areas concerned.

Only some cylinders imported or copied from an old file show this thing.

No artifacts show if I select "doesnt cast shadow" for the objects or "no shadows" from the light ... but while the artifact is gone so too is any scene dynamic.

Hoping there's a fairly simple fix since there are about 3,000 of these cylinders in the scene. Meanwhile I'll continue pressing buttons.
