You have to agree, it wasn't very "hidden", was it? ;-) The only "bad" stuff about the example is the name - "gamma shader", it sure doesn't sound too useful, but you'll have to read between the lines. > Your link is very interesting , but way too advanced for me > , and way too hidden for most users . Not really sure if it's > even related to what we are going on and on about in the first place . The manual states: This example shows how to create a light source that casts special kind of light that illuminates only certain kind of objects. The topic states: exclude or include lightsources for objects I for one found these closely related ;-) > Still , it is a good link and one that does show the > amazing power of RS VSL (Visual Shading Language) . The RS > manual is an amazing source of information , but way too dry I never, or very very rarely, consider an example material to be a fully usable material. I tend to think of them as code snippets that I can implement in my own materials depending on how I need the material to behave. I.e. sometimes I could accept the bad checker code, but other times I would go for the AA checker code; all depending on my own goals. I think you do a mistake of seing these examples as full materials, they are not, they are mere examples of what can be done and how to do it. It is up to the user to find ways to incorporate these into their own designs. 3DS Max has a huge pretty well defined material lib built in. Did I ever use it? No, not "as is", but I tend to start with the values they hold and start from scratch. On a very tight time schedule, I might have -- but I'm never in a hurry :-D > ... way too > " Short but Sweet " in it's attempt at conveying critical > info- ormation (as far as I'm concerned , anyway) . One example of the above. Try to recreate the lit backside of Saturns rings. The illumination part. How would you do it once the colors has been set? Then check out the paper example and modify as needed to get what you want. That is how I "think" when I play with VSL. Didn't realize it makes me "extra-advanced".
