Yes, of course, create a camera.
This will do ... create a camera, and, as
I do things, create an object centred on the thing I want to move around, drop
(camera and object) to a level with the object selected first, delete the
object, then rotate the level as needed in the "properties/gen/object
space/rotation" numerical input box.
This works very well since usually when I need to
do this I will often need to return to that view so the camera will already be
in place. Also I have only needed this with regard to the x axis so it will also
be very easy to enter 90 degree variations, etc as well.
But yes, if RMB + Alt + Shift was smooth rather
than 45 degree steps for this purpose things would be easier.
