As I mentioned originally , turn down the AA and this
project renders in no time . This project's Anti-Aliasing
is cranked up and it's sampling too . Turn them down
(after you figure out how to have Property Control
Windows showing) and this simple scene renders in an
instant .

The actual Ambient Occlusion Post-Processing Effect
is lightning fast (10 seconds) compared to the 200
second render of all those sharp & hard corners in
that scene .

That's also because of the noise in the soft shadows. For a fair comparison, switch off the soft shadows... they recommend high AA with soft shadows but no AA with post effects (the downscaling takes care of it), so what to do? ;) I agree the AA should be low here, it's no use anyway because it's destroyed by the post effects at object edges. Better crank up light source quality.

Lightning fast? It depends on the context. Do you want to render an animation? If a frame needs 10 minutes without AO but 30 minutes with it, I'll pass... whatever, it's a great shader Arjo! I'm going to try it with some large scenes and compare it to real GI.

I have a 10 second render now and then a 10 second Post-
Process AO & for that kind of dramatic difference it is
well worth it in my opinion.

Further more , I'll bet about the same percentage of
RS3D users know how to eventually grab an off-screen
Property Window as do know how to administer Gi unto
their scene ... even more reason to use a simple AO
shader like this one.

An even better way to solve this:
- check bank account
- go to local hardware store
- ignore shop personnel, grab a cheap TFT, pay, get home and hook it up permanently as second monitor

Actually , this could be an awesome way to bring
new users into the world of RS3D Post-Processing ,
perhaps ? RS3D Post is becoming a more & more essen-
tial working methodology , if you ask me . Not using
it is completely missing the point in a certain way .

Thanks again for taking the time to share this project
with the list Arjo .

Yes it's essential! I have only two problems with it: the AA destruction and the Blur effect.
