I tried many of those sort of settings in Preferences/Classes. Deleting all
references to realsoft in windows registry and a clean install seemed a
quicker solution.

I have no problem with that but I immediately change material preview in the
material property window from 50x50 to 200x200 (Graphical User
Interface/Gadget/List Property Gadget/Material Gadget.
For the size of the preview in the material select window go to Graphical
User Interface/Gadget/Material Preview List.
