Yeah, Modo is great software, and as already said, has many modelling-features 
that RS3D hasn´t.
Also look at Silo - their website offers several hours of highquality 
videotutorials that can be of use for nearly any polygon-modeller.

Both simply did something right - developing great software PLUS having good 
marketing and PR.
