Hm... I cannot tell you anything about performance, but about power: I used to hate FreeMarker when I first got in touch with it (and sometimes still do today) because it is sooooo picky. But at the same time it is also so more powerful with it's ability to call full methods with parameters or the precise error messages compared to JSP.
