Just to say that I would go with Nils's recommendation for using Javascript widgets provided by the services you want to integrate.
We had a requirement to integrate AddThis into our site. I took a look at the Frisbee module, but realised I could do it in about 5 minutes using the Javascript widget provided by AddThis and a paragraph. In addition the AddThis widget takes care of doing the asynchronous loading for us; we just need to configure it correctly. If I were to integrate Twitter I would take exactly the same approach as I did for AddThis, unless you have some very specific requirements for processing the Tweets on the server side.
