Hi Jan,

the logs should be in tomct/webapps/magnoliaAuthor/logs

the most likely reasons for this are:
- out of memory or
- not enough file handles.

You don't say which OS you are running your instances on, but specially on 
Ubuntu the second one is a common problem. See 
http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/display/WIKI/Too+Many+Open+Files for details.
