Just to conclude the story: The servers hosting http://java.sun.com were down. Some say it was due to flooding (!!). The problem was that web.xml points to http://java.sun.com for the XSI location. Turning off xml validation in server.xml was no help. But after getting the xsi file locally, things got better.
And after I finally could reboot the standard Magnolia 4.3.6 instance, http://java.sun.com came back to live again...
