I still think you are running into problems with too many open files. On unix files and sockets are the same and oracle is using sockets to communicate so you can easily run into the issue with oracle.
try to set the sysctl as well as the limits (remember that the limits might be unlimited for you, but not necessarily for the user you use to run either tomcat or oracle).
