Thanks a million! Sure enough that was the problem! I had no idea I had to mess around with ACLs for the public site. I haven't had to do that for any other objects. But for some reason Simple Media requires it.
I went to Roles : anonymous, Edit role, select Media, give it Read-only permissions and Save. et voilà! Thank you very much. I wasted a lot of time looking at this problem but would probably have wasted a lot more if not for you help.
