The fact that your template does not show up in the dropdown is probably due to 
availability restrictions.

stkArticle belongs to the content template category. Availability rules (hard 
coded) say that a content template can only be "assigned to a page whose parent 
page is section, content or feature". If you tried to add your template at the 
root level of the site, for example, it would not show up in the dropdown 
because it is not allowed there. When you extended the stkArticle template you 
also inherited the availability rules.

Try to assign your template to a page somewhere else in the site hierarchy such 
as:

+ home (stkHome)
   + section (stkSection)
      - myPage (myTemplate) <-- You are allowed to assign stkArticle to a page 
at this level.
