Either the lucene index or the users workspace is corrupt on the box (possibly 
more, but you won't know until you can login). If it's just indexes go to 
<your-repo-home>/repositories/magnolia/workspaces/users folder and delete 
"index" subfolder. Indexes will be regenerated by JR on restart. If this 
doesn't help you can try to follow 
http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/display/WIKI/Reset+superuser+account guide to 
restore the superuser acc.

As for the cause it should be possible to decipher it from the logs prior to 
the first error occurrence. As Richard mentioned it could be because of OOME or 
also due to forced shutdown during update of indexes or DB (if your DB is 
non-transactional like MySQL w/ MyISAM)
