Even if we are an Enterprise customer, I can't agree more with Will.

The migration 4.5 was really painful, and we are facing the migration to 5 this
winter (hopefully).
We modified so heavily the system that the dialog migration alone is on the
good way to be a real pain, and I plan no less than 3 months for a migration.
Migration that is really nice, but not really necessary for the end customer.
It comes to a point where from a technical point of view the migration is a
really necessary thing, but from the commercial (and costs) point of view, it's
not an easy sell.

- Will websites improve greatly? Not likely in the short term.
- Will every thing work as before? Really not sure. After the migration, a huge
amount of testing will be necessary (we have more than 60 websites).

I understand the Magnolia point of view on this, innovation is necessary, and
keeping a system backwards compatible is very difficult and usually means doing
nasty compromises in the core developments, but you have to understand that for
a company, the cost of the migration is usually greater than the improvements
we have in the system. And in most companies, that just means "no migration".
For now I'm being lucky in mine and they are willing to upgrade, but if the
budget was tightened, you can imagine that migration goes to the last priority.
It's not ideal, but it's how it works, if the customer is not going to pay for
the migration (and for our end user at least, there's no spectacular
improvements on the feature list for them), so the company has to decide if
it's worth investing in it.
It's something you can do once (4.5), maybe twice (5), but I doubt they'll be
willing to spend 2-3 months on migrations every two years ...
