it seams that you separate author (your home/office PC?) and public (hosted)
instance.
I think most of your problems exist because of this set-up.
I recommend to run author and publish on the same host and everything works
fine.You can of course use separate hosts with dedicated IP addresses.
For Activation do not use Apache but use the Tomcat ports directly

why don't you use the VirtualHosts of Apache? For me this works fine

Hi Ralf,
I didn't use apache virtual host to map down to the home page at the
second level in the tree because I thought that mapping to that level
would send activation to the wrong place.
If not, how exactly would you map it?
