as a side node: there seems to be be some misconception on how activation works.
Basically the author instance sends a request to all configured public
instances, then the public instances actually send a new
request back to the admin server to fetch the new content.
So the admin server must be accessible from the public instances. (Which might
be difficult if your admin instance runs on you
machine at home).
Note that this will probably change with the next version of magnolia.

Hi Ralf,
I didn't use apache virtual host to map down to the home
page at the
second level in the tree because I thought that mapping to
that level
would send activation to the wrong place.
If not, how exactly would you map it?
