Hi Guillaume,

Nice to see we're being used in beautiful Québec ! (I'll listen to some Omnikrom tonight to celebrate... hehe)

I won't be going very far in terms of discussing points where we share the same approach, but let's continue in some others.

- "Checkbox" and "Select box" (the html <input type="checkbox" / >, or <select><option>). I've no precise idea, so I'd leave as is.

What's the context? Maybe something like "Case à cocher" and "(Boite de) sélection" ?
The context where I found them is the Samples:form dialogs, where one can insert such HTML elements as paragraphs. In context, "Case à cocher" sounds pretty straightforward to anyone without experience, whereas people with any (Web)UI culture will prefer CheckBox.

One could argue than such people will use the english GUI anyway :) I'm also lost when I use a french GUI, even though that's my native language...

As for the select box, I've personnaly always called them "Menu Pop Up", but that's just me. "Boîte de sélection" is not straightforward to me. But I've just remembered "menu déroulant".

Yeah, I'm not really convinced by any of these (nor by my own proposal, that is) ... and that has me thinking that there are certainly articles out there mentionning the same issues. Has anyone come accross the same translation questions? Surely. I'm sure there must be some kind of "best practices" or lists of annoying technical terms translated to french, somewhere !

Translating in the Samples templates/dialogs/paragraphs strings (standard users oriented) seems right, but I'll be carrefull if I encounter them somewhere else.

[Long part on accents for capitalized letters]
Sorry, just thought that level of nitpicking was somewhat funny :p)
Actually, it is kind of fun (me asking, and your friend actually knowing this to such an extent).

She's my living bible for all things orthography, grammar, typography, ... :-D

Consistency a must. (but you'll probably see that *in fact* we haven't been strict ;))
Well, I've now translated the missing strings that I am sure about, and started a 2nd pass to correct incoherences, but that's obviously the long part of the job.

And annoying... feel free to submit whatever you've done already, it's anyway much better than the current situation, and who knows, it might trigger more feedback!

Cheers,

greg
