I think it’s not easy to find a business model for developing Realsoft3D right
now.Although I would very much like him to continue to develop.

It is just sad because in 2 months EIAS will release version 10 after so many
years.

Whilst I would also like to see Realsoft3D kept alive and further developed
(V8 notwithstanding) I suspect that the Meskanen brothers need to spend
most of their time making a living for themselves - something that
Realsoft3D, with it's relatively small user-base, isn't going to provide
(the size of the user-base is a whole other historic issue now).

Considering the hiatus between the last bit of V7 news, posted on
2011-10-29, and the V8 announcement posted on 2018-12-06 (ref:
https://www.realsoft.com) my personal (uninformed) opinion is that RS3D has
become something of a hobby/vanity project for the Meskanens, kept alive
because it was a good bit of high quality work, did things right (instead
of wrong ;) and was something to be proud of.

I believe that if the Meskanens really want RS3D to survive, without a large
enough user-base to fund on-going development, then they need to
open-source it, if this is possible.  The trouble is that it may not be
possible to open-source RS3D because it may incorporate original algorithms
developed by the Mesakanens that have subsequently been licensed to other
parties/interests outside of RS3D on conditions that preclude open-source.

Thinking back over the years - my earliest user-list emails were from 1998 -
RS3D was a very important bit of software to me - it was what I used to
express myself, and in that respect defined me, so I would be very
interested to know how Juha and Vesa view RS3D - what it was to them in the
past, and what it is to them now.
