Does feel like we should use [mypy_primer](https://github.com/hauntsaninja/mypy_primer) which NumPy [use in their type checking CI](https://github.com/numpy/numpy/blob/main/.github/workflows/mypy_primer.yml). Note, NumPy previously had a separate stubs library and moved them in.
