Thanks @pitrou and @rok for your encouragement. I've submitted PR #51270 so you can see the ~400 proposed parameter changes. I would have marked it "draft" if I'd seen a way to do that -- I'm not confident enough to actually propose merging, and mainly want your initial take please on (a) does this look reasonable so that I didn't miss something silly, and (b) does it actually help performance (if it does, even a little, that would be very useful information!).
