Thanks @pitrou and @rok for your encouragement. I've submitted PR #51270 so you can see the ~400 proposed parameter changes. I'm glad to see it's marked "draft" -- my main questions are (a) does this look reasonable so that I didn't miss something silly, and (b) does it actually help performance at all in some cases (if it does, even a little, that would be very useful information!).
