Siegfried, Thanks for your reply.  The tutorial already uses a watchdog but 
it doesn't help in this case.  I wonder if the difference is because when 
the file sent to the Reader doesn't exist, the Reader process itself is 
waiting on the user rather than a process it invokes (e.g. printing) causing 
the problem.  Susan
