For grins, I tried ab with both one doc at a time and with  
_bulk_docs, both 10 and 100 at a time, OS X 10.4.11.  With one doc at  
a time, I got similar performance to what everyone else has  
reported.  With a 10 doc bulk save, I got about 4 req/sec, and with  
100 doc bulk save, ~2.5 req/sec.

I don't know if this is expected from the way the disk is written to,  
but by using bulk save, I was able to get ~250 docs/sec inserted (I  
checked, they're there), which is 2-ish orders of magnitude more.
