Okay, very well. If you find evidence this is broken on Linux
systems, please file a bug.

Tried it on my ubuntu laptop. (2Ghz dual core, 2GB ram)
1000 docs a la {"data":"the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy
dog."},
jcouchdb, reduced log level on both couchdb and jcouchdb, written
serially.
I get around 90 document creations per second.
Right - when I said "the same numbers", I meant on OS X.
On linux on EC2, I got a similar rate as you did.
