That shouldn't be necessary.  You should be able to select an existing
project and right click, Configure>ConvertToGradleProject.  And then gradle
support will 'take over' managing your dependencies.  If you edit the
.gradle files and change the dependencies, you will need to manually refresh
the classpath management at the moment.

Preferences>Dashboard, deselect 'show on startup'
