Not really an answer to the currently discussed points but I think it somehow belongs to this topic: In todays revision (19. Sept 06) «visible in navigation» and the navigation title of live-documents can be changed (without deactivating them). This also results in a change in the sitetree which is only reflected in live mode after deactivating-submitting-publishing of the document.
