Have you looked in the M2 console? It is activated by clicking on the down arrow next to the little window icon with a plus sign in the console view (see attached screenshot).
Anyway, you could also check whether your maven dependencies are sane, see this bug: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNGECLIPSE-288

Sometimes it stops after a while, but more often than not, I end up 
having to kill the process and restart Eclipse.




I'm using the development version from "update-dev".




Also, I don't know if this is related, but I've noticed that the 
lucene indexes sometimes get hosed and appear to cause something similar.

Re-indexing the repository usually fixes that.
