I always download a new distro and create a fresh new eclipse-version
folder. Since early 2.x releases I don't trust eclipse platform upgrades

I this particular case I
* installed fresh 3.4.1
* installed older m2e
* in several days - updated m2e
Worked like a charm.
Yes - installing 3.4.1 from downloaded distro rather than upgrade does
not have any issues installing latest m2e (did not try upgrading from
older m2e, did not need to). But still it's very annoying that the
Eclipse update fails so abysmally.
BTW: I could not find a way to export and re-import the workspace
project configuration. The configuration (ie the projects configured)
seemed to get lost even if the same workspace (external to Eclipse) is
used.
