I think you're right, for the visitor. In my experience, mail is easier
to use (better clients, doesn't require you to be online, not dependant
on the connection speed) and that's what keeps the contributors back.
I'm member of a couple of groups, and I've seen the same thing happen
everywhere. Check out sourceforges' forums vs. the mailinglist for any
given project.

I can imagine. What would be nice is something that works online _and_
accepts
mail. Maybe you and Paul Newby could work together?
