Alan, any reason you can think of that could cause this?

This surprises me. If the above works, this should too.

These are guaranteed to fail.

Set LogLevel to debug and let's see why Midgard thinks the login should
fail. Also,
I'd like to see the piece of MySQL logfile that's generated during the
login attempt.
