I upgraded my server from Mandrake 7.2 to Mandrake 8.0.
That comes with Apache 1.3.19, mod_ssl 2.8.2, mod_php 4.0.4pl1.

I got Apache, mod_ssl and PHP4 running on it.

I then set about getting Midgard 1.4 (with midgard-php3) running on
it, as I had under Mandrake 7.2. I had been running PHP4 for extensions
.php, .php4, but the Midgard PHP3 for files with extensions .php3.

Since the Midgard 1.4 RPMs for Mandrake 7.2 didn't work, I
downloaded the Midgard 1.4 sources, compiled and installed them.
But they still don't work, in this way:

When I run apachectl start, it gives 3 [OK]s. According to the console
messages, httpd has started. But a quick check of processes shows it
hasn't.

So I take a log at the error_log file. I had, as usual with Midgard,
set log_level to debug. There was nothing in the error_log file
following the information that the unique_id module had chosen
a particular number. There was no a single line from the
Midgard modules.

When I comment out the lines including midgard.conf and
midgard-data.conf, Apache happily starts and runs (but
obviously without Midgard).

What is going wrong?

[And before anyone suggests going straight to Midgard
1.4.1, I have quite a bit of data created under Midgard 1.4.]
