But each time I got an OK, and no error message!

I was using versioning quite successfully under Mandrake 7.2.
Midgard PHP3 (not 4) was being used for pages ending .php3 (and,
of course, in Midgard-generated pages), while PHP4 (including
separate LDAP and IMAP modules) was used for pages ending in
.php. The conflicts Alan Knowles mentioned didn't arise, as they were
loaded by libphp4.so, not Midgard's libphp3.so.
(Although I'll check my php3.ini and php.ini files to make sure of
that.)
Upgrading to Mandrake 8.0 screwed up a partition (thanks to
over-aggressive hdparm settings) so I had to install from scratch,
restore data from back ups, and then start adding on extra
libraries such as Midgard.

Then why are people agonising about the use of Repligard to get their
data out of 1.4 into 1.4.1? I have pages in a MySQL database, but
I thought the database structure had changed, so I couldn't just point the
new Midgard to the old database?
