If someone can give me a blow-by-blow for .debs... I started a few
times but the procedure for building .debs seems a lot more involved
than building rpms.

The Gargantuan package... ApacheToolbox does something like this. A
source-based install for a GP would be _way_ more platform-dependant
hassle than I'd want to bother with, and for binary packages we could
just depend on the native packages.
