And we've got the results:
For some reason nowadays midgard does not do the entities translation anymore (it used to, frankly I'm suprised at this change, never noticed it before...) when evaluating page->content (and propably elements etc).
It used to be that all "normal" (outside <?php ?> tags) would have the special characters translated to entities. Anybody on the devel list remember when and more importantly why this was changed ?? (it was very handy feature and nice default behaviour, those that needed to circumvent it certainly had the know-how, now the less experienced need to do extra work to get things working properly)
