midgard-php4 compiled against 4.1 was running fine but I decided to compile

php4-mysql is compiled against 3.x cause of some licences issue.

Follow my blog to solve the problem.

Thanks; I'll try this.
Wouldn't it also have been enough to rebuild the debs from your source against my currently installed mysql stuff (which I did) or do I need to edit your source to explicitly use the right version of mysql client libs?

I have never tried to use MySQL 4.0 with client compiled against 3.x.
You should install libmysqlclient10-dev and recompile packages , if you need to compile against MySQL 3.x.

Gah, no way, I don't want 3.x

I was trying to do my hacking on the midgard packages rather than the php packages as it makes deployment simpler.

Shame midgard can't ask php which mysql client libs it was compiled against
