I like the idea you put out here and like to add two thoughts of my own.
Even though I don't think this whole thing is going to be implemented
and usable anytime soon:
1) Give a better view of items(files,tags, whatever) more distantly
related. In a hierarchy I might not only be interested in parent/child
relations, but also in 'brother/sister', 'grandparents', etc. On the
other hand I might also want the option to hide those relations when I
know exactly what I'm looking for. So maybe keep this difference in mind
for searching vs. browsing files.
2) Allow for relations between files. I can imagine to have two files
which semantically belong together but I have a hard time finding a tag
or sth. like that for this relation between the two files. I think
having a way to say "Those two files belong together, show them both if
I search for one of them" or sth. along those lines would be very
helpful at times. Maybe even allow for a file to be a tag (think of it
as the cover picture for a photo-book).
