First follow the steps in the Installation Guide for setting up the mail and activation jars. This is required for all of the e-mail based features.

Next, go to the Server Administration page to enable the site-wide setting to enable e-mail notification on comments. If this is disabled; it disables it site-wide. If it is enabled, it allows users to enable it on a per-weblog basis.

Once that is done, go to your own blog Settings page and enable the per-weblog option inn Comment Settings.

I believe steps 2 and 3 are also covered in the Administration and User Guides, respectively. This split is inconvenient when you're one guy playing all three roles of installer, administrator, and user; in such cases your best bet is probably to search the respective guides for a keyword, like "mail".

Let us know if you have more problems (after the FMs have been R'd :-).

But no mail gets sent, nothing seems to appear in my logs, etc.

It seems odd to me that such an essential feature be disabled by default,
which makes me wonder if I've taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Is roller supposed to be able to do this?

No-one?

I'll settle for :

'works out of the box for me on <some-other-appserver>
'I had to do x and y to get it working on <yet-another-appserver>'

Thanks.
