I believe steps 2 and 3 are also covered in the Administration and User Guides, respectively. This split is inconvenient when you're one guy playing all three roles of installer, administrator, and user; in such cases your best bet is probably to search the respective guides for a keyword, like "mail".
Thanks again. My main concern is I still had to * create a javamail session called 'mail/Session' *uncomment the resource-ref for mail/Session at the bottom of WEB-INF/web.xml neither of which seemed to be documented (and which also break things like inviting users to co-author a blog).
