Not as great as you think, I'm afraid.  By default, everything is
compiled -O3, so I tried building just the ones you mentioned -O0, which
didn't help.  Then I built the whole package -O0, and it still makes the
same mistake.

Actually, I guess that's pretty good -- it indicates that this isn't an
optimization problem after all, right?

Oh, and this is with GCC 5.4.0 on NetBSD/amd64-current.
