Why should i use merlin instead of fortress?

* auto assembly * muli-layer configuration management * advanced context management * composite component management * packaged deployment scenarios * local and remote repository integration * integral jar extension management * Maven plugin support for meta-info generation and simulated deployment * product packaging and install services * based on Avalon component meta model * support for legacy migration

And what is their status?

Both are released products.

Oh.... And where does phoenix come in?

It doesn't.

Phoenix is legacy - there is no active development of the platform here at Avalon. Work is ongoing to provide a full migration solution for Phoenix users on the Merlin platform. Two mains areas pending include incorporation of a more complete logging management substem and the integration of JMX MBean integration. Both of these topics relate to work on enhancing the kernel to support plugable container side extensions.
