Hmm,

aparently the part of code (or only the UI elements) concerning the 
integration of spellcheckers in general have been removed in 
Mozilla-Releases newer than RC1.
RC1-based software like benonex 0.8-pre or Moz. 1.0rc1 have had a 
checkbox ("enable spellchecker") in the preferences dialog and 
corrensponding entries in the menu of at least mailnews.

So it seems not possible at the moment, to install any spellchecker - 
not the spellchecker from mozdev.org and not any other spellchecker.

I personally do not need this feature.
