That's becouse other components of the base system need an MTA. Things like for example cron. Besides that peple may be unable to fetch packages for different reasons and having a fully operating system with an MTA integrated into system as rapporting tool is without doubt a pluss. Packages are also not that tightly supervised as the main system which at least in theory should come with security fixes for any of it's components. Marcin.
