We will keep sendmail. Everyone who does not want sendmail can disable it with NO_SENDMAIL=yes in make.conf. Everyone who wants $mailer can install it from pkgsrc and just adjust /etc/mail/mailer.conf.
A complete mail server is part of an operating system like lpr, ntp, dhcpd, ftpd, sshd and all the other things we ship.
