In fact I remember creating my first listbox ever showing values of
another table and storing their foreign keys was set up from looking at
the film database example of SO(5.2), not by reading the docs. ;)

No offence intended, don't read me saying "anything from Microsoft is
bad". 

It was only my head coming up on your statement about "internally"
discussing the future of base:

This was my starting point for putting some light on other facets of the
db app creating universe.

Do you have any measure on what users are trying to do with base? Maybe
some grouping in simple users, database app developers and so on can
clearify the needs to get the goals hit one by one ...

I'm pleased to read this.

I've tried to get an old copy of Lotus Approach 97 from a magazine CD
running but it doesn't work correctly, even on Win98 - I would have
donated it otherwise. I was really impressed by it's simplicity and the
ease of use.

With a side view to the possibilities already in the API the way to
something like it (thinking of independent modal forms) should not be
too far.
