Hi to all the Base users out there.

A few minutes ago I sent an email on the dev list, directed to the
product management staff for the Base module. The crux of the email
was regarding the conspicuous absence of any mention of the Base
module in general and the Sun Report Builder in specific at the just
finished OOoConn 07.

However, asking a question like that to the folks in the development
community is only half the answer. The other half is to ask it of the
user community. Where were we?

It seems that hardly a week goes by that I don't see somewhere
mentioned how OpenOffice.org is a project with problems. That it is
too tightly controlled by SUN, not inclusive enough of contributors,
etc. etc.. With almost as great a frequency there is talk in the blogs
and press, and from the OO.org council, about how this is changing,
how the process is being opened up and more effort put into creating a
community based culture for the project.

This is all fine and good, but for it to succeed then the community
must avail themselves of this offer of inclusiveness. My question then
is simple. How do we go about doing that?

Where are the extensions writers for Base? Where are the small
pre-canned database applications? How do we go about helping to get
those types of things together? When a conference is being planned and
a call for papers is made, how do we insure that someone from our
community responds? How do we get input to the other groups,
marketing, website development and most important User Experience?

There are individuals here that are doing things as individuals, is
there some way we can leverage that to work together towards common
goals?

Food for thought and I hope to hear from people with ideas.

Sincerely,

Drew
