Further experimentations have indicated that the problem is almost certainly
#63448 (dba.oo.org bugzilla), which is afaict not fixed yet, incquiries to
Symantec were not helpful so far.
The solution for us is to use the Symantec ODBC driver instead of JDBC.
Which I'm not happy about because opening the database now takes much
longer than before.
