Hi Drew and Dan,
First off, a big thank you for such an enlightening response though I have
to admit that I am about 30 - 40 % lost in your response. I don't think any
of the MS help desk, which probably is a call center buried deep in the
darkest of a third world continent, but I digress......

Anyway, if you will permit me, may I reiterate what you have said to see if
I have gotten the gist of it or am totally way off base. Actually, I am no
IT person and have only had a few years of self taught use of MS products.
The most I can claim to know with regards to programming is a basic
knowledge in Visual basic editor which I have used quite extensively in MS
excel. In other words, quite pathetic.

That said, if I have understood you correctly, all those JDBC, ODBC and ADO
etc. are means to connect to known database servers such as MySQL,
PostgreSQL? Hmm maybe I am a little more lost than I thought. Perhaps if I
gave you the senario that I am working with you could advise me a little
more?

You see, I work in a company using only windows2K and XP. There are only a
limited number of computers with MS Access installed, and none on those
which I wish to have access to the database. There are currently no plans
in the near future to increase the licences, due in large part to the
exorbitant price tag. As I have only knowledge in MS products, my creation
of the database would have to be MS Access.

I am planning to have a database of information which staff on the
production floor should be able to access at any time and which would
record what they have read, sort of like information websites that maintain
membership databases and am able to track what each member is downloading
or reading ( I think these use cookies for such purpose right?). this is to
replace the current manual method of making them read the information and
signing against an attendance sheet.

I had originally toyed with the idea of running Access with individual
computers accessing it through the access data page. However, I am unable
to get it to work the way a normal Access form does, due either to the
limitations of the program or my skill or perhaps a little of both.

Having read up on Open Office, my initial plan was to create the database
with MS access and installing OO Base on those satalite computers to access
this database. I have read that I would either need to create a ODBC
something on each computer to allow OO Base to access those databases
created in MS Access. My main worry on this was that it would first be too
difficult for me given my lack of knowledge in this field and secondly,
that it would serve the multi-user environment that I intend it to.

Having read your brief on using a separate back end server (can this be a
simple shared drive on the server?), I was wondering, what would be the
best way for me to implement my idea given my knowledge level on this?

Perhaps, after having read my intentions, you might have decided that there
are alternative programs that can handle these situations better. in any
case, any help you could render me on this would truly be a god send. Thank
you in advance.

PS. We just got the first season of 'Are you smarter than a fifth grader'
here in Singapore, and I must admit I thought I was pretty smart, at first,
but after watching several episodes, I have been greatly humbled. ;)
Regards,
Kelvin Teoh
