I think you can't put it this way. SSL support is available in general:

However, some clients and/or operating systems might not support it.

For example "mysqlnd" (MySQL native driver for PHP") does not yet support SSL encryption. PHP users need to stay with the good old C API and its library to use SSL. As the use of the old or new library (mysqlnd) is transparent to the PHP user, its no problem to continue using the old library, if you really need SSL.

Wheter the new native OpenOffice Connector will support it in early versions remains to be seen. Personally, I don't think its a killer feature and must-have for the first version. But we shall listen to the demands of the users...

like others explained already your administrator/webhost its most likely concerned about the fact that they have to enable *any* remote connection at all. SSL, VPN, SSH tunnels and firewalls are the usual measures to secure the connection.
