Hi Frank,
Thank you for the link. Very usefull indeed.
One more question: Sure there must exist a way to remove/deregister
JDBC,ODBC drivrers from Base (I'll be glad to know how, perhaps hiding a
jar file). If I remove the HSQLDB driver will that prevent me to access
the local/internal HSQLDB engine? Same for dBase?
Thanks

Hi Olivier,
I am investigating the consequences of Base removal from a Windows
installation and I came up with some strange UI effects.
...
http://specs.openoffice.org/installation/index.html lists the
specification "OpenOffice.org Base as optional Module" specification,
where the expected behavior is described.
As you can read there, removing Base after the installation already ran
for a while was not in the focus, the optional Base module in setup was
introduced a while ago with the intention to do fresh installations
without any Base UI.
This raises a question if this is work-as-designed or should I fill an
issue to have the UI cleared from these non functional behaviour
(perhaps an issue may already exist...)
You might file issues - after all, removing modules is a valid
scenarios, and works for the other apps, so it should for Base, too.
Though, there are open issues around the "Base as optional module". For
instance, there might be different opinions whether, when you removed
Base, you should be able to *access* databases. When you just remove the
Base UI, you probably would be surprised if you couldn't do mail merges
anymore. Since mail merges are impossible without at least Base's core
functionality, removing it is not feasible. But there are more cases,
much more on the edge like mail merges, which would need to be defined.
That said, I think we have neither have the resources nor the urgent
need to address this topic in the near future, but nonetheless: Filing
issues helps fixing *all* related problems once it eventually *is*
addressed.
Thanks & Ciao
Frank
